Most temperature trivia is forgettable. This one isn't. At −40 degrees, Celsius and Fahrenheit give the same number. No conversion needed. No calculation required. Just: −40.

It sticks in people's memories because it's the only time both scales agree – and because the number itself sounds extreme, which it is.

What is −40°C in Fahrenheit?

−40°C is exactly −40°F. No rounding. No approximation. The conversion formula gives you the same number you started with.

Check the maths: (−40 × 9/5) + 32 = −72 + 32 = −40°F ✓

And the reverse: (−40 − 32) × 5/9 = −72 × 5/9 = −40°C ✓

The formula is self-consistent at this one point – and nowhere else in the scale.

Why do the scales meet here?

Celsius and Fahrenheit use different starting points and different step sizes. Celsius places zero at the freezing point of water. Fahrenheit places zero at roughly −18°C and uses smaller degree steps (each Fahrenheit degree is about 0.56°C).

Because Fahrenheit starts lower but climbs faster, the two scales are on a collision course going downward. They cross at exactly −40. Below that, Fahrenheit values are numerically smaller than their Celsius equivalents. Above that, Fahrenheit is always the higher number.

Think of it like two runners starting at different positions and running at different speeds. They cross once, at one specific point. That point is −40.

Is this the only point where they agree?

Yes. You can verify this algebraically – setting the conversion formula equal to itself resolves to a single value: −40. There is no second crossing point.

For reference: at 0°C (32°F), the scales are 32 apart. At 100°C (212°F), they're 112 apart. The gap grows as temperatures rise. Only at −40 does it reach zero – and then grow again in the other direction.

How cold is −40° in practice?

Extremely cold. Beyond what most people experience outside arctic regions. At −40°, exposed skin can develop frostbite in under 10 minutes. Car fuel gels. Breath doesn't appear as fog – it appears as ice crystals. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, frostbite can occur within minutes at these temperatures even with calm winds.

Temperatures this low occur naturally in northern Canada, Siberia, and parts of Alaska during winter. They're common reference points for engineers designing cold-weather equipment, which is partly why the −40 crossover gets used in technical contexts.
