Weather apps have trained us to look for two numbers: the actual temperature and the "feels like" temperature. The second one always sounds more useful. After all, isn't what it feels like the whole point?

Not exactly. "Feels like" is an estimate built on assumptions – and when those assumptions don't match your situation, the number actively misleads you.

What "feels like" actually measures

"Feels like" (also called apparent temperature) is a model, not a measurement. It combines the actual air temperature with wind speed and humidity to estimate what an exposed person walking outdoors might perceive.

In cold conditions, wind strips away the warm layer of air around your body, making it feel colder – this is the wind chill calculation. In hot, humid conditions, high moisture in the air slows evaporation from your skin, making it harder to cool down – this is the heat index.

Both of these are real effects. The number just applies them under a specific set of circumstances that may or may not match yours.

Why it often makes things worse

The "feels like" model assumes you are standing outside, fully exposed to wind, with bare skin. If you are wearing a jacket and scarf, the wind chill calculation is largely irrelevant to you. If you are indoors, the humidity index for the outdoors means nothing at all.

The number also tends to be extreme when conditions are extreme. A day that is 5°C with strong wind might show a "feels like" of -4°C. That number is correct for an exposed face – but completely wrong for a person dressed for winter. It creates alarm where judgment is actually needed.

It also adds cognitive load on top of an already confusing system. If you are already struggling to understand a temperature scale, introducing a second, model-derived number doubles the complexity without always doubling the usefulness.

When "feels like" temperature does help

"Feels like" is genuinely useful in two narrow scenarios: extreme wind chill in cold weather, and extreme humidity in hot weather. In those cases, the gap between actual and apparent temperature is large enough to genuinely affect decisions – especially for vulnerable people (young children, elderly, or anyone with health conditions).

Outside of those extremes, its value drops sharply. A 20°C day with a 17°C "feels like" because of a light breeze is not meaningfully colder. The additional number just creates noise.

What to use instead

Use the actual temperature as your primary reference. It is consistent, measurable, and universally understood. Layer in "feels like" only when wind or humidity is extreme – and even then, treat it as a rough guide rather than a precise reading.

This is also why showing temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit matters. The source of confusion for most people isn't that they lack a "feels like" number – it's that the actual number is in the wrong scale for their intuition to read in the first place.
